As we discussed previously, Sunday shouldn’t be the finish line for your message. This time, I want to dive into something that often kills sermon momentum before it even starts: The Disjointed Calendar.
I’ve noticed a common pattern in many churches: the pastor may be speaking on “Peace,” but the social media feed is shouting about five different high-energy events, and the email newsletter is packed with disjointed announcements.
When your promotions don’t match your preaching, you create “cognitive load.” Your people only have so much bandwidth, and when we throw too many conflicting priorities at them, the main message gets diluted.
If this is dsecribing youre church calendar, you can start restoring some sanity to your programming by trying the “Rule of One” audit this week:
- Audit Your Channels: Look at your social media, your stage announcements, your digital displays, etc. Do they point back to the central theme of Sunday?
- The Filter: Before adding anything to the calendar, ask: “Does this support or distract from the current season of teaching?“
- Unified Voice: Choose one primary “action step” for the week that aligns with your message. If you’re preaching on community, the primary announcement should be about small groups.
When your calendar, your promotions, and your preaching are all in sync, you stop “surviving” your schedule and start “leading” through it.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a cluttered calendar and want to see how to align your strategy for the coming weeks, I’d love to help you map it out.
